Summer Decluttering Checklist, Part Two: The Bedroom

Summer changes the way we use our homes. In the bedroom, lighter clothes, sandals, beach bags, and vacation items often collect on chairs and corners. Find ideas that will help you find a way to reset your bedroom for the season to come.

PRACTICAL ORGANIZATION

Bedrooms often collect items that do not have an obvious home: clean laundry, shopping bags, travel supplies, clothing to return, and things carried in from other rooms. Begin with the visible areas before moving into closets and drawers.

Clear the Main Surfaces

Reset the nightstand, dresser top, chair, and any bench or table.

Remove:

  • Empty cups and bottles

  • Receipts and paperwork

  • Products you do not use

  • Clothing waiting to be put away

  • Items that belong elsewhere

  • Unnecessary decorative clutter

Keep the nightstand especially simple. It should support rest rather than act as another storage surface.

Address the Clothing Chair

Many bedrooms have a chair, bench, or corner where clothing collects.

Sort everything into four groups:

  • Clean and ready to put away

  • Dirty and ready for laundry

  • Needs repair or special care

  • No longer wanted

Complete the process rather than creating new piles. Put clean clothing away, move dirty items to the hamper, and place donations directly into a bag.

Keeping a hamper near the closet or dressing area helps contain clothing before it becomes visible bedroom clutter. My solution was to find a small sized hamper as the ideal clothing chair companion. I even upgraded the hamper to one with a lid and wheels so that my room looks tidier and I can easily move it arond collecting more pieces before I reach my laundry room.

These are three fantastic solutions that will make your life easier:

🤩Best: Slim Laundry Hamper with Lid and Wheels (rattan)

😍Better: Slim Laundry Basket with Wheels

😊Good: Freestanding Basket for Dirty Clothes (pack of 2)

Review Summer Clothing

You do not need to evaluate your entire wardrobe. Begin with the clothing you wore—or avoided—this summer.

Ask:

  • Did I wear this?

  • Was it comfortable?

  • Does it fit my current life?

  • Would I choose it again next summer?

  • Am I keeping it because I like it or because I feel guilty?

Donate items that are in good condition but no longer work for you. Discard anything badly damaged or worn beyond repair.

Keep a short list of genuine wardrobe gaps so you do not confuse decluttering with an invitation to shop.

Reset Shoes, Bags, and Summer Accessories

Gather sandals, hats, sunglasses, beach bags, swimwear, and travel accessories.

Remove:

  • Damaged sandals

  • Uncomfortable shoes

  • Broken sunglasses

  • Bags you did not use

  • Worn swimwear

  • Empty sunscreen or toiletry containers

  • Vacation items that were never unpacked

Clean and store the items you plan to use next summer. Keep transitional pieces available if warm weather continues into fall. The best solution for keeping transitional pieces available is underbed storage. You can check out our post on the 5 Best Organization Solutions for a Tidier Bedroom.

Prepare the Bedroom for Fall

As the season changes, you may need space for warmer bedding, closed shoes, light jackets, or different work routines.

Complete a few practical tasks:

  • Check blankets for damage

  • Clear space for fall clothing

  • Move rarely used summer items out of prime storage

  • Return books, chargers, and personal items to consistent homes

  • Make sure the hamper and laundry routine are easy to maintain

Do not bring every fall item out at once. Create enough space for the transition, then adjust as the weather changes.

Remember that you do not need to do these recommendations all at once. Do one at a time, so that you can achieve a calmer bedroom that will make it easier to rest, get dressed, and begin the day without immediately facing clutter.

Have a great easier every day! 💟
